We are in challenging times right now as lots of people were laid off, furloughed, fired, or struggling seeking employment due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Trust, I can totally relate — so here are some suggestions I pulled up to help get some extra coin flowing through that bank account, honey.

1. File for Unemployment

To those that have been laid off, furloughed, or fired, I would highly advise to file for unemployment ASAP. You will be paid on a weekly basis and the amount given is based on your position and income (alongside $600). For more information, go to your state’s Department of Labor website (https://dol.ny.gov/ — Here’s the one for New York residents ONLY).

2. Stimulus Check

(Source: https://www.kiplinger.com/slideshow/taxes/T054-S001-get-a-stimulus-check-if-you-don-t-file-taxes/index.html)

Who doesn’t want to get $1,200? And for FREE?!? Though it isn’t much, especially being on lockdown for almost three months, this is something. Make sure you are eligible to get your free money on the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/). If you are, you can receive payment by direct deposit. Or although it will take longer, you can also receive it by mail.

3. Consider Food Delivery and Meal Services

Due to the global pandemic, grocery stores have been running low on supplies and some restaurants have been forced to shut down because they aren’t getting enough business. To help and earn some coin, consider doing food deliveries. You can be a driver for UberEats, DoorDash, GrubHub/Seamless, and/or Postmates and help your community keep their businesses open. All of these delivery services companies also now offer a contactless delivery option, so you can stay safe while you do it.

4. Online Tutoring

(Source: http://connection.cgc.edu/2020/03/schedule-virtual-tutoring-support.html)

Do you have the expertise and patience to help others nail that exam or homework assignment? Apply for virtual tutoring. You can help clarify assignments and/or questions to students better than professors and you’ll get paid. For more information and possibly apply, check out TutorMe (https://tutorme.com/apply/).

5. Claim Yo Money

I know, this sounds skeptical, but hear me out, this is REAL. Unclaimed.org (https://unclaimed.org/) is a website where you can search your name and the state you reside in to see if you have any sort of unclaimed properties. Unclaimed properties could be refunds, stocks, trust distributions, and many more.

6. Freelance Opportunities

To my creatives, this suggestion is for y’all. Apply to freelancing gigs to keep upbeat with your skills in the comfort of your own home. You can search up opportunities via Fiverr, Freelancer, Indeed, LinkedIn, Upwork, and/or social media such as Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter.

7. Online Surveys and Focus Groups

(Source: https://www.doughroller.net/make-money/can-you-really-make-money-taking-online-surveys/)

Would you like to get paid for giving your opinion? Consider online surveys and focus groups. Your opinion can help shape products before it hits the market. Though this option doesn’t pay as much as the others listed, payment is distributed through PayPal, check, or in gift cards such as Amazon, Target, Walmart, and more. Here are some websites to register for surveys and focus groups:

  • Vindale Research
  • Pinecone Research
  • Respondent
  • User Interviews

8. Apply for “Fund for Public Health NYC”

Fund for Public Health NYC (FPHNYC) is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to making health first priority and accessible for all New Yorkers. They are now offering job positions that directly help COVID relief. For more information and to apply, check out the FPHNYC website (https://fphnyc.org/about/careers/).
